Description

With the Riesling Felsberg, Fru by Georges Schiltz once again proves his instinct for the exceptional. While most of his vineyards grow on calcareous soils, he was drawn to the idea of working on a gypsum-keuper slope, a rare terroir in Luxembourg. The soil, a mixture of gypsum and clay-rich keuper marl, gives the wine exactly what the winemaker was seeking: a smooth texture paired with vibrant freshness. Felsberg is a steep slope, and working there demands patience and precision. Not every year yields the desired quality—only in particularly good vintages do late-harvest wines of exceptional ripeness emerge. For this selection, only the dried, highly ripe berries are picked, some covered by noble rot (pourriture noble), a natural process that concentrates aromas and gives the wine depth and complexity. The result is a Riesling (Spätlese/Vendange Tardive) without peer in Luxembourg. It shows an almost German style reminiscent of the great late-harvest wines from the Mosel or Rheingau, yet remains unmistakably Luxembourgish. The wine is smooth and approachable, but never heavy. On the nose, it unfolds a cocktail of ripe fruits—yellow peach, dried apricot, and a touch of honey—accompanied by a clear, taut acidity that gives the wine precision and length. This interplay between sweetness and freshness is what makes it so captivating. At the table, Felsberg reveals its versatility. The winemaker confidently recommends it with coq au vin, where its delicate sweetness perfectly balances the robust sauce. Dark chocolate with praline filling or a piece of aged cheese also pair beautifully. It is a wine that proves sweet wines need not be confined to the end of a meal—they can, when thoughtfully combined, anchor an entire dish. Riesling Felsberg began as a unique experiment that has become a permanent part of the estate’s range. It stands for curiosity, craftsmanship, and the courage to take different paths—a wine that shows that great character can emerge even beyond the calcareous slopes of Luxembourg’s Moselle.
