Pauls Winery - Gewürztraminer
Pauls Winery - 2022 - AOP L-00349
Description
The 2022 Gewürztraminer from Paul Winery is a wine full of expression and personality, a tribute to the classic style of this traditional grape variety. It does not come from a single vineyard but is a so-called vineyard blend from various parcels, with the Schengen Markusberg site contributing the largest share. This diversity of soils and microclimates creates depth, complexity, and a harmonious balance between richness and freshness. The winemaker deliberately works without binding to a single vineyard. Each year, the parcels whose grapes show the best aromatic potential are selected. This results in a wine not tied to a specific terroir but one that unites Luxembourg’s diversity of character in a single glass. The Gewürztraminer was vinified with cultured yeast to emphasize the typical aromas of the variety clearly and authentically. The grapes reached a ripeness level of over 90 °Oechsle—very ripe but still below the late-harvest threshold, which the winemaker sets at around 105 °Oechsle. The Oechsle value describes the natural sugar content of the grape must and thus indicates the degree of ripeness: the higher the value, the sweeter and more concentrated the fruit. In Luxembourg, the AOP Moselle Luxembourgeoise precisely defines when a wine may be called a late harvest or vendange tardive. This threshold, depending on variety, vintage, and other factors, usually lies between 95 and 105 °Oechsle. In other countries, regulations differ: in Germany, late harvest starts at about 76 °Oechsle, while Austria requires an even higher minimum. The result is a characterful Gewürztraminer with lush, aromatic expression, showing the variety in its classical form—balanced, elegant, and without heaviness. In the glass, it reveals an intense fragrance of roses, lychee, and tropical fruits, typical of Gewürztraminer but rendered elegantly and structured at Paul’s Winery. On the palate, it is round, smooth, and creamy, with moderate residual sweetness and low acidity, giving it a harmonious, silky texture. Stylistically, it recalls a classic Alsatian Gewürztraminer, a wine that combines body, spice, and depth. It pairs beautifully with rich, aromatic dishes such as blue cheese (Bleu d’Auvergne), foie gras, or spicy Asian cuisine. It is especially intriguing with dishes that contain subtle heat, salt, or fat, as its sweetness and aromatics provide balance. At the same time, it is also delightful on its own—a wine for calm moments meant to be savored. The 2022 Gewürztraminer is not a wine that hides. It shows strength, richness, and authenticity—a bold wine that stands apart from the often drier, more modern interpretations of other producers. It represents the kind of wine one does not forget: full of character, aromatic, and uncompromisingly typical Gewürztraminer.
